HighLevel calls with nowhere to go: check every phone number

By SHAJ Studio. Checked against HighLevel's help center and the Phone System screens in October 2026.

The short answer

HighLevel (also called GoHighLevel or GHL) decides where an incoming call goes from the settings on each phone number. HighLevel's help center does not say what happens to a call when nothing is set. Watchtower checks every phone number in every sub-account each day and shows the ones with no place to send calls on the dashboard and in your next daily email.

How HighLevel decides where a call goes

HighLevel's help article on inbound calls gives this routing order.

  1. An IVR, a workflow or Voice AI that is set to answer first.
  2. Owner-based routing.
  3. Team members.
  4. The forwarding destination.
  5. The backup, after the timeout.

The phone number's own settings hold the team members, the forwarding destination and the timeout.

HighLevel's help center does not say what happens to a call when nothing is set.

How to set a destination

HighLevel's help article on a phone number's incoming call settings describes these steps.

  1. In the sub-account, open Settings, then Phone System, then the Phone numbers tab.
  2. Find the number in the list, open its three-dot menu and choose Edit Configuration. The panel has Basic Details, Call Forwarding and Advanced Settings tabs.
  3. Under Calls Go To, pick the main team member.
  4. Use Ring more Team members to add up to 6 people.
  5. On the Call Forwarding tab, set where calls go. HighLevel rings one destination at a time by priority. The settings screen lists IVR, Team Member (1st Priority), External Phone Number (2nd Priority), Voice AI and Business Phone Number (3rd Priority). The Business Phone Number is the one set in Business Profile.
  6. The "Prefer forwarding calls to" setting chooses between the Contact's Owner and the Phone Number's Owner. This matches the owner-based routing in HighLevel's article.
  7. Under Timeout, tick Incoming Call Timeout and enter the number of seconds. The screen notes that an incoming call goes to the backup after that many seconds. HighLevel's help article recommends about 20 seconds.

After the timeout, the backup is Voice AI or Voicemail.

Check every number by hand

  1. Open the list of phone numbers in the sub-account. The Forwarding Number column shows forwarding without opening each number.
  2. For each number, open Edit Configuration.
  3. Check that Calls Go To has a team member.
  4. Check that the Call Forwarding tab has a destination.
  5. Check the backup timeout and the backup.
  6. Repeat for every number in every sub-account.

By hand this is several screens for each number in every sub-account.

What Watchtower checks

Watchtower reads the phone numbers of every sub-account each day. For each number it reads whether the number can take calls and texts and which of three call settings are filled in: an assigned team member, a ring group and a forwarding number.

Two more phone checks look at other things and do not change where a call goes: the business phone number field of the sub-account (Critical when it is empty or looks like a placeholder) and a Voice AI action that points to a field that is not in the sub-account (Warning).

Every check runs once a day, on every number in every sub-account. A number that breaks during the day appears in the next morning's email. If HighLevel does not return the full list of numbers, Watchtower skips the number checks for that run and raises nothing.

What Watchtower does not read

Watchtower does not read IVR and call flows, forwarding schedules, missed-call text-back, voicemail, call recording or porting. It also does not read the timeout, the ring settings, whether a forwarding number works, whether a call actually reaches the business phone or whether a team member can answer. It sees only the settings listed above. A clean result says nothing about those settings.

HighLevel's help center does not say what happens to a call when nothing is set, so Watchtower makes no claim about it either.

Watchtower is read-only: it never changes a phone number or a client account. See what the daily email looks like in the sample digest. Or read how Watchtower works.

Questions

How does HighLevel decide where an incoming call goes?

HighLevel's help article on inbound calls gives this order: an IVR, a workflow or Voice AI set to answer first, then owner-based routing, then team members, then the forwarding destination, then the backup after the timeout.

What happens to a call when a HighLevel phone number has no destination?

HighLevel's help center does not say what happens to a call when nothing is set. Watchtower makes no claim about it either. It lists the numbers that have no place to send calls so that you can set one.

Where do I set where calls go for a HighLevel phone number?

Open the number's Edit Configuration from the phone numbers list. Calls Go To picks the main team member, Ring more Team members can add up to 6 people and the Call Forwarding tab sets the destination. The timeout decides when the backup applies.

What does Watchtower check about phone numbers?

Whether a sub-account has a phone number, whether any number can send texts and make calls, whether the phone account is active, whether a number that can take calls has an assigned team member, a ring group or a forwarding number and whether a Voice AI agent is set to answer on a number pool that is switched off. Every check runs once a day.

Does Watchtower read my IVR or call flows?

No. Watchtower does not read IVR and call flows, forwarding schedules, missed-call text-back, voicemail, call recording or porting. A number that answers only through an IVR or Voice AI looks the same to Watchtower as a number with no destination.

Does Watchtower change my phone settings?

No. Watchtower is read-only. It reports phone problems and never edits, creates or deletes anything in a sub-account.
