HighLevel email bounce suspension: triggers and how to avoid it

By SHAJ Studio. Checked against HighLevel's help center and the Email Services screen in October 2026.

The short answer

HighLevel (also called GoHighLevel or GHL) suspends a sub-account's email sending when its bounce rate reaches 5%. A bounce rate of 0 to 3% is healthy. HighLevel sends a warning email at 3%. The first two blocks last 12 hours each. The third block is permanent and only HighLevel Support can lift it. Once a sub-account has sent at least 50 emails in 7 days, Watchtower warns when its hard bounce rate reaches 2% and lists it in your next daily email.

What HighLevel's bounce suspension does

A bounce is an email that could not be delivered. HighLevel's help center says a healthy bounce rate is 0 to 3%. At 3% HighLevel sends a warning email. At 5% it suspends sending.

Why it matters for an agency

While sending is blocked, that sub-account's emails do not go out. A climbing rate is easy to miss when you have to open each sub-account's email stats to see it. A third block is permanent. Getting it lifted depends on HighLevel Support.

Check the bounce rate by hand

  1. In the sub-account, open Settings, then Email Services, then the Email Analytics tab.
  2. Click the date range at the top right and choose Last 7 Days.
  3. Divide the Bounced count by the Sent count. For example, 13 bounced out of 500 sent is 2.6%.
  4. Compare it with HighLevel's numbers: 0 to 3% is healthy, 3% brings a warning email and 5% suspends sending.
  5. Repeat for every sub-account that sends email.

HighLevel's help article does not give the period its own bounce rate is measured over, so a 7-day figure is a guide and not a copy of HighLevel's number.

How to bring the bounce rate down

Catch it across every sub-account

Watchtower checks the bounce rate of every sub-account on its own. It reads the email events HighLevel sends it, counts each email once and divides hard bounces by emails sent over the last 7 days. A hard bounce is a permanent failure. Temporary failures are not counted.

By default it warns at 2% and marks the finding critical at 3%, once a sub-account has sent at least 50 emails in those 7 days. An agency can change both rates and the minimum in Watchtower's settings. It recalculates as new email events arrive, so it does not wait for the daily check. The finding reads like this: "Bounce rate 2.6% over 7 days (13 of 500 emails). Sending warnings start at 3%, and sending can be suspended at 5%." Its Fix link opens the sub-account's Email Services page.

What it does not see. Watchtower only knows about emails that HighLevel reports to it. We have not tested a sub-account that sends through its own SMTP service or a connected Gmail or Outlook mailbox, so we do not claim it sees those sends. It cannot see whether a sub-account is suspended right now. HighLevel's own count may differ from Watchtower's 7-day figure, so treat a warning as an early sign and check the numbers in HighLevel.

Watchtower also checks the DMARC record of a sending domain it finds and flags when a sub-account's send volume stops or drops. It is read-only: it never changes anything in a client account. See what the daily email looks like in the sample digest. Or read how Watchtower works.

Questions

What bounce rate gets HighLevel email suspended?

HighLevel's help center says sending is suspended at a 5% bounce rate. A rate of 0 to 3% is healthy and a warning email goes out at 3%. Since August 2026 the lock needs at least 500 sends and 25 bounces before it can act.

How long does a bounce suspension last?

The first block lasts 12 hours and the second block lasts 12 hours. The third block is permanent.

Can a permanent block be lifted?

Only HighLevel Support can lift it. HighLevel does not promise to approve it.

Does HighLevel warn me before suspending email sending?

Yes. HighLevel sends a warning email when the bounce rate reaches 3%.

Can Watchtower see my bounce rate?

For email that HighLevel reports to it, yes. Once a sub-account has sent at least 50 emails in 7 days, Watchtower warns when its hard bounce rate reaches 2% and lists it in your next daily email. By default it marks the finding critical at 3%. We have not tested sub-accounts that send through their own SMTP service or a connected mailbox, so we do not claim it sees those. It cannot see a suspension itself.

Does Watchtower stop emails from sending?

No. Watchtower is read-only. It reports problems and links to the setting that needs fixing. It never edits, creates or deletes anything in a sub-account.
